Sasthamcotta Lake-More Information

The chemical composition of the Sasthamcotta Lake is so unique that plankton do not thrive in the lake. Thus the lake is free from all forms of algae. Only some select species of fish are found in the lake. These properties of the lake are subjects of research taken up by the CESS.
An alteration in the chemical composition can result in the lake becoming a habitat for plankton and other micro-organisms, which, in turn, would make the lake a home for a chain of living organisms. Environmentalists say the program evolved so far for the conservation of the lake is restricted to the site of the lake alone.
A recent investigation by the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) had revealed that the lake was losing its water level at an alarming rate of 1 cm per day. This meant that the lake had started drying up.
