Environmentalists and others concerned had noticed the phenomenon much earlier and had voiced concern over the same. However, there had been no positive response from the authorities concerned. While several campaigns had been organized at the Government level and otherwise in the past on spreading awareness and finding measures to save the lake, an effective program was yet to take shape.
Two other fresh water bodies, namely Chelurpola Kayal and Chittumala chira remain mostly unused. All these three fresh water bodies together account for an area of 6.80 sq.km. Detailed studies covering geology, geomorphology, hydrology, flora, fauna and socio-economic activities have been conducted.
